Comfortable in his new life in Deer Run, young Ruben Beeler is called away by Marshal Marion Daniels to help in an investigation of murder and mutilation north of St. Joe. That begins a search for killers and leads the men northward into unfamiliar territory, pitting them against a family of outlaws who have ruled Nodaway County since before the Civil War.

Push comes ta shove right smart, an’ things git hot an’ heavy quick, as even Rube, an’ Marion, an’ Homer, out numbered an’ outgunned, take to the dodge. It comes to be some desperate for all of ’em afore they git off THE NODAWAY TRAIL.

I hadn’t read a Western in many years; never read McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove, but certainly enjoyed the TV mini-series. Decades ago read Owen Wister, and over my lifetime I probably read 2-3 novels by Louis L’Amour, the iconic writer of the genre. To this day, the relatively brief era of the cowboys, in particular stories focusing on the shootists who could truly handle the various revolvers of their few decades of notoriety, remains an historical epoch that fascinates devotees. I use and like guns, and even though I know the Wild West didn’t stay wild all that long, I have always enjoyed movies dealing with that period. My all-time favorite is “The Gunfighter” (1950), with Gregory Peck as aging pistolero Jimmy Ringo, trying to find a quiet retirement. Then, probably, “The Searchers.”
I write the foregoing preamble because what I discover in David Lewis’ Westerns, the Trail Series, is what I loved about the aforementioned examples of the Western era. The characters ring true, the dialects/lingo are authentically rendered, place descriptions evoke mind pictures, the events are painted across a credible canvas, and the pacing—ah, the pacing—is that of Lonesome Dove and The Gunfighter: deliberate, perfectly in tune with an era wherein people walked or rode from here to there—days between most towns. Do not be misled: even with the period perfect pacing, tension abounds. Lewis has a remarkable facility to create conflict on several levels, be it the promise or struggle of personal relationships, or that of impending physical confrontation. The next page always calls. And, as always with Lewis’ books, references to firearms are accurate, from their nomenclature and function to their wielding for their intended purpose.
In Nodaway Trail, we continue the unhurried but adventurous life of Ruben Beeler, whom we first met as a barely-bearded youth of high principle and innate, if uncertain, courage. Now Ruben has become a man, and as enjoyable as his developing character is following his significant skill as a woodworker carpenter. In this book Ruben meets the love of (we hope) his life, and quite a woman she is. Naturally, the happy serenity that could be ever-after is interrupted, even threatened, by men of criminal bent who need to be dissuaded—by the white hats—from their evil ways. Marshal Marion Daniels takes on this responsibility, but for the necessary reliable support, he enlists Ruben and another well-drawn associate from the first book, Homer Poteet.
I look forward to all the books in this series, and also to an opportunity to hear Lewis (an experienced radio voice) deliver his stories through one or more of his audio books. The operative word is “stories,” because above all, Lewis is a story-teller in the finest tradition.

Nodaway Trail the Trail series Book 2 edition by David R Lewis Ulva Eldridge Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I have not read better developed or more likable characters ever, in any genre. I would read one of these with minimal or no antagonist/crisis just because I love the characters. Tip Start reading from book one so you fully understand the characters and their relationships.
Loved it. Looking forward to reading the sequels. They characters seem very real compared to regular westerns. The language used, the description of the towns, horses, etc., and the activities that took place are all true to life.
I am totally hooked on these books. When I started the first one I thought it was gonna be about a simpleton or a real country hick. Boy was is wrong, I am really enjoying these books. These Marshall's are really smart. The books also have a little humor in them to give you a chuckle. Well worth reading.
I have read the first four of the trail series by David Lewis and I'm starting the fifth. I haven't enjoyed a western series this much in years. The stories are excellently written. I love the characters; the old western ethos; the humor which makes me laugh out loud; the hardship and the friendships. If you like good westerns, I think you can't help but like this. I wish they would make it a series on television like Lonesome Dove. And no, I don't know David Lewis but happened accidentally, luckily, on his writing. I give it 5 stars
Lewis did it again. I'm now addicted to his cowboy fiction. I don't really care how late it is or how tired I am, I have to read several chapters before retiring. I hope there are more to come in his Trail Series, but I will absolutely read anything he writes.
OK, I NEVER read westerns and only got the first one in this series, Deer Run Trail, because it was free. Was I ever surprised how much I enjoyed it. The characters, the dialect and the humor just grew on me to where I actually thought about BUYING the second book. What is wrong with me? Now after finishing Nodaway Trail, geez, I'm thinking of buying the third book!! I thought Nodaway was even better than Deer Run and now I care so much about these characters I don't know if I can stop. This author sure knows a lot about horses and guns and you really start believing he must have lived the life of a cowboy way back then.
This begins right where "Deer Run Trail" leaves off. Ruben marries Miss Harmony & she is now pregnant. Marion Daniels, U.S. Marshal wants Ruben to help him go after Jack & Jim Waxler & after Harmony encourages him to go he saddles up Willie & is off on another adventure. The Waxler brothers have killed one whore & cut up another so they need to be stopped before more innocents are killed.
The characters in this series are some humor & some git it done...Marion is "some git it done." He wastes no time & is totally out of the norm from what you would expect from a U.S. Marshal. Rough, tough & fearless.
Loved Arliss the mule. It was a nice added touch to this story.
Before they are finished they unexpectedly run into Arkansas Bill Cole who asks to join them in the pursuit of the Waxler brothers. Since Marion knows they are slightly outnumbered & he knows what Arkansas Bill can do both he and Ruben agree & welcome the help.
This is a really great series that I am totally enjoying. Looking forward to the next one...
