Luray Flitch is a neurotic, pill-popping recluse who discovers a prophetic Victorian diary, only to learn that the end of the world is just around the corner. With his trusty dog, Jason, Luray ventures out to warn the world that the end is near, but people keep trying to steal the diary. Written a century before by British clairvoyant Permelia Lyttle, the diary hides many other secrets a murder mystery and Permelia's strange life in the Women’s Lunatic Asylum, where she was forced to give psychic readings to the power elite of her day. Prophecies unite in this satirical novel of eccentric villains, top-level conspiracies, the Apocalypse, and one really terrific dog. Follow Luray’s search for redemption, inept gun play, and discovery of the meaning of life while dancing the naked tango with the sweet but quirky Abigail Lind in the midnight gardens of Belvedere.

Permelia Lyttle Guide to the End of the World Jon Robertson 9780985466206 Books

I really enjoyed reading this! The story is a clever, crazy mix of apocalypse, satire, and slapstick. A mystery, a dog, a diary, a madhouse, magnates of industry, a derby hat, Monticello, a mound of prescription medications, a wise homeless man at the library, a double-crossing professor, a madcap forum of religious leaders opining on the apocalypse, a love affair, dancing in the moonlit forest - it's all there, and then some. It feels like there are ingredients here from Indiana Jones, Celestine Prophecy, National Treasure, and Left Behind, plus some hints of Dr. Strangelove, and Christopher Buckley, all mixed together into its own unique and wonderful cake! I trusted the book to carry me along as the story entered the rabbit hole into its own world, and it didn't disappoint. Just as enjoyable as the story was the writing itself - laugh out loud funny turns of phrase interwoven with thoughtful insights and social commentary. Smooth, lively pacing, rich vocabulary, and inventive dialogue. You'll remember this book, and tell other people. It is too fun to miss.

Permelia Lyttle Guide to the End of the World Jon Robertson 9780985466206 Books Reviews

There's not much more I can say than what other 5-star reviews have already indicated, so I'll just "ditto" all of them and say that yes, this book is an enjoyable romp and a fast-paced adventure with amusing characters. Plus, Permelia's got some great advice that we'd all do well to heed!
I really had a fun time reading this novel! The characters are all well written, but I'd say the dog was my favorite character. The book had me from the first page, which is rare for me. I loved the social commentary interspersed throughout the story and I actually chuckled out loud in several spots. The book was goofy but interesting throughout, and I highly recommend it.
I picked up this book thinking I could read it at a liesurely pace but found, instead, how hard it was to put down. It is an intriguing story that takes place in an intriguing time in history and sets up a brilliant contrast between then and now in a way that makes the Victorian age not so distant from our time in the present. The story is quirky, endearing, fast-paced, down to earth, dramatic and whimsical. Luray is a charming lead character. I highly recommend this book if you are ready to enjoy a lively romp through eras as the hero guides you through a unique and dramatically unfolding story.
A book that travels back in history to deliver a message that is ahead of its time.

The message I got from reading the book is that it isn't any religion that will be humankind's salvation, but instead it will be that humans are capable of Love. Love is an idea of treating all other beings with respect; and the recognition of every living being's worth.

Your book delivered that message beautifully. It was a fun journey, an adventure, which delivered to the reader its wisdom; that the secret of life's purpose for us all is that we need love and acceptance, and to be valued for the place we keep on this earth in our lifetime. The proverbial `end of the world,' becomes a non-issue. Your sense of humor insulates the reader from any dire consequences of taking so lightly such a serious topic.

And it's a good thing the world hasn't ended because I am really looking forward to reading the sequel!
I just received this book the other day and dove right in. I have been trying to read just a little every day because I am so enjoying Luray and Jason that I don't want it to end.
It's a "maze" of quirky characters (although I think I've met some of them) and some down to earth information that is relevant to today's society with a dash of other worldy insanity. Interspersed with the guide is down-to-earth sentences that made me giggle. I think my favorite was when the main character was immersed in reading the antiquity he stopped to make a note to order something from and make sure to get the free shipping.
If you enjoy fast paced writing with some conspiracy and down and out lunacy, pick this up today. You won't regret it.
I only regret that it's almost finished and now I must wait impatiently for the sequel!
First, let me say that this book has the best vintage automobile versus SUV car chase ever!

Jon Robertson has crafted an engaging tale that's quirky and imaginative and just a whole lot of fun. Far from simple entertainment, this is also a story about responsibility - personal. national, and global. The leading man (who is actually quite a mess and in a heck of a hopeless situation as the story begins) is portrayed with kindness and understanding as a brilliant mind, and a victim of circumstance. Mr. Robertson has a gift for creating uniquely unlikely characters that are deeply thoughtful and charmingly funny - that's the good guys. The bad guys are also rich characters with complex motives. There were plenty of "I didn't see that coming" moments!

The story is as comical as it is bizarre, but Permelia's message rings true - we need to care for the environment, and for all living things. We need to be able to provide for ourselves and for our families. We need to create communities where people are able to depend on one another. We need to find value in who we are and not what we have.

This was a really enjoyable read with a powerful message and I highly recommend it. The wacky characters, the rich descriptions, the lovely use of language, and especially the academic lady ..... and then there's that fantastic car chase!
Jon Robertson's madcap tale sets a cast of strange characters chasing after one another, and after a manuscript from an early 20th century imprisoned psychic, Permelia Lyttle. This well paced and cleverly plotted novel keeps the reader thoroughly engaged as the chase continues, content is revealed, pages are destroyed, and motives are clarified. One can enjoy Permelia Lyttle's Guide simply as a charming and wacky story. However, many of her prescriptions are entirely applicable to our own time practical wisdom, playfully delivered. The book promises a sequel which I anxiously await.
